What Is a Diclofenac Patch?

A diclofenac patch is a skin patch which contains diclofenac epolamine, a type of pain reliever known as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, or NSAID. The diclofenac patch is used to treat mild to moderate pain caused by factors such as muscle strains or sprains and is primarily used by those who can not tolerate the oral form of this drug. Some of the possible side effects include skin irritation at the application site, headache or dizziness. Occasionally, more severe complications may arise, including seizures, intestinal bleeding, or the development of a potentially life-threatening allergic reaction. Any questions or concerns about the use of the diclofenac patch on an individual basis should be discussed with a doctor or other medical professional.

Before using the diclofenac patch, it is important that the prescribing physician obtains a complete medical history, as this method of treatment may not be appropriate for some people.
