What is a Coffee Body Scrub?

Coffee body scrub is an exfoliating body wash made from coffee grounds. The coffee grounds exfoliate the skin, removing dead skin cells to reveal softer skin. Some also state that the caffeine found in coffee body scrub can actually help firm cellulite, though this has not been scientifically proven. Body scrub might also be referred to as body polish.

Body scrub is a type of body wash that is meant to be used outside of the tub or shower, or as part of a massage at a spa. Coffee body scrub, or any type of body scrub, should never be used on the delicate skin of the face -- the exfoliation is much too harsh. This type of scrub is not meant to be used every day, but rather once a week or a few times a month, depending on the dryness and roughness of the skin.

Most body scrubs are made up of a few different ingredients. The first is an exfoliant, which, in this case, is the coffee grounds, but could also be apricot pieces, salt, sugar, or jojoba beads, to name a few. These act as tiny buffers on the skin, to remove dead skin cells. Body scrubs are usually made from an oil base, which might be coconut oil, almond oil, or a less expensive type. The oil holds the body scrub together, and helps to soften the skin.

Finally, a fragrance is often added for extra effect. In addition to these three common ingredients, extra skin-softening or skin-nourishing ingredients may be added as well. Read the label carefully to check for any ingredients that might cause an allergic reaction. It is also a good idea to test any new skin product in a small area first, to be sure there is no reaction. If a coffee body scrub causes a rash or irritation, try a different brand or just make some at home. Many recipes can be found for body scrubs, some with only a few common ingredients, simply by searching online.

A coffee body scrub can be received at the spa or at home. Treatments at the spa are generally more thorough and work better for hard-to-reach areas. To use a body scrub at home, it is best to work in small areas. First, wet the area to be scrubbed, then rub the body scrub into the area for about one minute. Rinse the body scrub off, and move on to the next area. After that, apply a moisturizer to the skin for smooth, soft results.
