Many people suffer from constipation at some point in their lives. The symptoms typically include bloating and uncomfortable pressure, as well as the inability to have a bowel movement. It is a common ailment that can affect anyone at anytime. Fortunately, there are many natural constipation remedies that usually can be found in the home. The majority of remedies include different types of foods, fluids, herbs and lifestyle changes.

Food can play a major role in helping relieve the symptoms of constipation. Many people can quickly treat and prevent constipation simply by adding fiber, such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables, to their regular diet. Most fruits are natural constipation remedies, especially prunes, grapes, figs and papayas. Consuming leafy spinach works for many people because it has the organic material to clean, reconstruct and regenerate the intestinal track. If a person regularly gets constipated, he or she should avoid refined foods such as sugar, cheese, ice cream and other processed items.

Drinking more water is another of the most common types of constipation remedies. Fluids work by assisting in making bowel movements easier to pass. There are also many laxative teas that can help to treat constipation. Apple juice or cider assists some people, and coffee works as a stimulant for others. Avoiding dehydrating beverages such as cola and alcohol also can help prevent constipation.

Some people believe that herbs are good constipation remedies. Many types that are commonly used include basil, cayenne, linseed, milk thistle and slippery elm. Honey that is added to warm water or tea works for many people. Consuming oils such as soybean, vegetable or safflower by themselves or using them as a salad dressing is another way to help lubricate the intestines.

Adding regular exercise, such as walking, to daily routines can relieve many sufferers of constipation. The physical movement can help to speed up an otherwise sedentary metabolism. Exercise also helps to strengthen muscles, including the core group, to prevent constipation from occurring in the first place.

Taking supplements such as magnesium or probiotics also works to help relieve constipation for some people. Prescription medicine sometimes causes constipation, so if a particular natural remedy does not work within a few days, the affected person should speak with his or her doctor or pharmacist. Over-the-counter constipation remedies can become habit-forming and damage the liver, so they typically should be used as a last-resort treatment method.
