There are a number of natural cures for insomnia that include home remedies and lifestyle changes, which have worked for some people and are recommended by doctors and medical organizations. While these natural cures for insomnia may help some people, it is important for those experiencing persistent or recurring insomnia to speak to a doctor about other medical options. This is because an ongoing lack of sleep can lead to a number of serious conditions and health risks. If natural cures for insomnia do not work, treatments such as behavioral therapies or medication may be necessary. Some of the most common natural cures for insomnia have to do with changes to one's exercise routine, changes to one's diet, and changes to the amount of time spent in bed as well as the kinds of activities that one does in bed.

Getting daily exercise is one of the most commonly recommended natural cures for insomnia. Exercising shortly before bed, however, is not recommended as doing so can actually contribute to sleeplessness rather than cure it. When exercise is used as one of the natural cures for insomnia, it should usually be done five or even six hours before bed time. In terms of diet, people suffering from insomnia should avoid eating large meals or drinking much before bed time as this can cause one to have difficulty falling asleep and may also cause one to wake up to use the bathroom.

It is also recommended that people using natural cures for insomnia should avoid drinking caffeinated beverages after the middle of the day and should also reduce their intake of alcohol. Drinking caffeinated beverages after noon or so can make it difficult to fall asleep at night. Furthermore, even though alcohol may help one fall asleep initially, it can cause restless sleep and may also cause the sleeper to wake up periodically throughout the night. People who are trying to battle insomnia should also curtail their intake of nicotine.

A number of behavioral changes can also be used as natural cures for insomnia. In an attempt to cure insomnia, or simply to get more restful sleep, sticking to normal sleeping hours is useful. It is also important not to spend time in bed while doing things like reading, eating, or watching television. Some natural remedies for insomnia include the use of valerian and melatonin. Be sure to speak to a doctor before using either of these products.
