What Are the Best Tips for DIY Barns?

The most important step in building DIY barns is the planning phase, during which the builder will make crucial decisions regarding the size and placement of the structure, as well as the particular style of barn that will be built. Some simple DIY barns may not require a solid floor, while others will require a concrete slab. This slab will need to be measured, graded, poured, and cured before the rest of the structure is erected, and this process can take several days or even weeks. Adequate setting time should be planned for before starting the project.

Assembling the proper tools will also be important before building DIY barns. The necessary tools will vary according to the type of barn being built; some barn kits require minimal tools and carpentry skills, but if the builder is planning on building the barn from scratch, more tools and carpentry skills will be required. This means the builder will need to decide what kind of barn is being built first. Pole barns tend to be easier to construct, while true gambrel barns with load-bearing walls tend to be more complex projects. If the DIY barns are being used for simple storage and keeping the interior dry is not an issue, a pole barn is a good choice.

It is also important to remember that the builder may need to obtain building permits before beginning the construction of any DIY barns. Such permits can be procured at town offices, and the structure may be subject to inspection during and after the construction process. This means the structure will need to be built in accordance with local laws and regulations; it will be important to find property boundary lines to ensure the structure does not encroach on neighboring properties, and the structure will need to meet fire codes as well.

Regardless of the type of DIY barns the builder chooses to erect, it will be necessary to hire assistants or other builders who can help erect the structure safely. Walls are usually built on the ground and then raised into place, and the heavy walls will require more than one person to raise and secure in place. Other people should be present for safety reasons as well, in case an injury or other emergency situation occurs. First aid kits should always be on hand, as well as other safety equipment including hard hats, eye protection, ear protection, and anything else applicable to adequate safety.
