Completing prerequisites for certain degree programs online can be a great way to save time and money, in many cases. There are a number of things to keep in mind when completing prerequisites online, however, and the first and most important is to make sure that the prerequisites will apply to a chosen degree program. It is also important to verify that all of the necessary information for future courses is covered in the prerequisites. Lastly, before completing prerequisites online, it is very important to determine if the online school is properly accredited. Following all these steps will help to ensure that time and money is not wasted.

Many people choose to complete prerequisites online for a number of reasons; to better fit with their schedule, or because the credit hours are cheaper than those offered at their chosen university where they will be earning a degree. Before signing up for any courses, however, it is very important to do a lot of research, and pay a visit to the registrar at each university to be sure the credits will transfer and successfully satisfy the degree requirements as well as the prerequisite requirements for certain courses. Never just assume that because a course has a similar title that it can be transferred between colleges.

When attempting to complete prerequisites online, it may also be a good idea to look at the syllabus and assignments for the course and make sure that the information covered is sufficient. Some degree programs are a lot more stringent and challenging than others, and taking an easy prerequisite may actually be detrimental later on if the student is left unprepared for future courses.

In addition, examine the accreditation for the college or university offering the prerequisites online. At the very least, it should be nationally accredited. Regional accreditation is preferable, however, as this indicates a more rigorous accreditation process, and tends to be more highly respected in the educational community.

Completing prerequisites online can be beneficial, and can help to save time and money. It is important to be sure that the courses can be completed within a desired time frame, however, and that the fees will fit into the student's budget. This is especially true if the student is using loans to get through school; be sure to check with the lender ahead of time to be sure it won't be a problem to apply loans to courses at a different school.
