Inflammation of the joints can not only be a painful condition, but can also be very limiting for those who suffer from it. One of the best forms of treatment for inflammation of the joints is rest, though icing affected areas has also been found to be highly effective. In addition, some individuals can successfully treat inflammation of the joints through mild to moderate physical activity. In the most severe cases, anti-inflammatory medications or cortisone shots may be required to completely eradicate the pain and inflammation of the joints.

In many cases, one of the best ways to treat inflammation of the joints is through rest. Typically, those who suffer from this type of pain are encouraged to allow the affected joint to rest completely for a few days not only to treat pain, but also to prevent further inflammation or injury. Those who suffer from inflammation of the joints are commonly encouraged to use the appropriate type of joint brace during the rest period in order to completely stabilize the affected area and prevent further movement. In the most serious cases, these types of braces are even required during sleep.

Ice is another great form of treatment for inflammation of the joints, and typically achieves the best results when used within 48 hours of the initial appearance of joint inflammation. Often, those who are affected with inflammation of the joints are encouraged to ice the inflamed joint for a minimum of 15 minutes, and then remove the ice for approximately the same amount of time. Repeating this process of placing ice on and off the affected area at regular intervals throughout the day has been found to be most effective. Ice treats inflammation through its ability to constrict blood flow.

Mild to moderate exercise has been found to be effective for some in the treatment of inflammation of the joints. In most cases, exercises that promote range of movement are most effective, as they allow the affected individual to increase flexibility. Typically, these exercises should be done on days when inflammation is at a minimum in order to see the best results.

In some cases, anti-inflammatory medications may be recommended for those who suffer from inflammation of the joints. Typically, over-the-counter painkillers are effective for those suffering from this condition. In the more serious cases, a cortisone shot may be required in order to completely eradicate inflammation of the joints.
