How Do I Go into Computer Animation?

Getting into computer animation can be difficult, and it often requires an understanding of various technical considerations as well as artistic skills. It is a highly competitive field, so look for an education that not only trains you in what you need to know but also stands out as an excellent resource on a résumé. As you are gaining your education, work on a portfolio that demonstrates your artistic work and a video that shows off the best animations you create. Finding professional work in computer animation can be hard, so be sure to look for opportunities in fields like advertising and video production.

As you begin the education you need to go into computer animation, consider what aspect of the field you wish to specialize in. You can typically gain education and employment working with the more technical Computer Science (CS) elements of the field, or in the artistic aspects of it. Colleges and technical schools may offer programs in CS that you can use to go into computer animation, while art schools and universities often provide you with training to become an artist. Both elements of this industry are equally important, and your interests and inherent abilities can help guide your choice.

While you are in school, especially in your last year or two, the projects you complete should contribute toward the creation of your portfolio. This is a collection of your work that you can use to demonstrate your skills and abilities to a potential employer. You can create a print version, which shows off assets that you have created on paper, including printouts of digital images. This is especially important if you wish to focus on the artistic side of the industry. Your portfolio will likely also include a demo video, often on a disc or other digital medium, which shows off your work with computer animation in motion.

Once you complete your education, look for different opportunities to begin working in the computer animation industry. Possibilities at studios that work on video games or film and television special effects may be hard to find, as these are typically the most competitive and sought after jobs. While you are still gaining experience, look for opportunities to create computer animation for other types of companies. This can include advertisers that often use photorealistic digital images in commercials. Video production companies may also need an animator to create logos for different projects, create minor special effects, and to provide assistance with compositing images together.
