There are several ways to deal with headaches during pregnancy including using warm compresses, relaxation exercises, massage, and certain medications. It is important to discuss headaches with a physician. Not all treatments may be recommended during pregnancy.

Headaches during pregnancy can be caused by a variety of factors including increased hormone levels, stress, and caffeine withdrawal. Although headaches can occur in all stages of pregnancy, they occur most often in the first and third trimester. Because changing hormone levels may lead to headaches, some women develop headaches as one of the first symptoms of pregnancy. In late pregnancy, the added weight can lead to posture problems and cause tension headaches.

Natural methods to treat headaches may help reduce pain and medication can be avoided. Although headaches can occur during a normal pregnancy, they can also be a sign of preeclampsia, which is a pregnancy complication. Preeclampsia can affect both mom and unborn baby. If headaches during pregnancy are persistent or become severe, women should contact their doctors as soon as possible.
