How do I Choose the Best Solar Motion Detector?

A solar motion detector is a light that is powered by the sun throughout the day and uses that energy to operate at night whenever it detects motion. It can be useful for security purposes, safety, visibility and to help keep unwanted animals away. Some detectors are stationary while others rotate. The detector can be staked into the ground or attached to the house depending on necessity and preference.

Security and safety is one of the main reasons to purchase a solar motion detector. It allows for those approaching the house to see the area if it is dark, especially if there is a substantial amount of foliage. It also allows for those inside the home to see who is approaching and if there is anyone unwanted walking around. The detector typically is bright and covers a broad area.

Where the light should go is a factor when choosing one. If there is no, or a minimal, amount of light in the front of the house, placing a solar motion detector above the front door can be a good option. A driveway or garage light is also advantageous to cover that area of the house. For the backyard, another light can attach to the house or patio.

When purchasing a solar motion detector, consider whether the light should go on the house or simply staked into the ground. Some solar motion detectors come with the ability to stick the lights into the ground, some specifically hang on the house and others can do both. Make sure the motion detector comes with the ability to place it where you want it.

A solar motion detector may rotate or stay stationary so it is best to consider the preference before making the purchase. Some can rotate 180 degrees while others rotate 360 degrees; the rotation can allow for a wider area around the home to get illuminated. Many stay stationary and focus on one spot. There are also those that come with a switch to change it from stationary to rotating.

Although the solar motion detector illuminates the area when it detects movement, there are also some that come with a remote. This can be useful for those who feel more comfortable lighting up the area in front of the house before they get close enough to set off the detector. Some may also want to use it from inside the house if they hear a noise that is out of reach of the detector.

Price may also play a factor when choosing a solar motion detector, however, they usually are affordable at approximately $100 US Dollars (USD) or less. Before purchasing, make sure it comes with a warranty. Choosing the right one can mean safety for the home as well as the inhabitants and visitors.
