The process of choosing the right enterprise resource planning (ERP) program for your company can be a daunting task. This is because there are so many types of software applications provided in a given program, with each one focused on supporting different types of interrelated functions within a company structure. For this reason, it is important to look closely at each ERP system and evaluate it on the basis of the type of functions included, the ability to adapt the software to meet specific needs within the company, and the overall cost for the program package.

In terms of functionality, it is important to note that many of the components found in various ERP program packages are considered standard and are likely to be found in just about every product offering. At the same time, some are geared more toward specific types of business cultures, such as small business rather than large business. Others are more appropriate for use in a given industry, such as healthcare or the legal profession. By looking more closely at programs that are more likely to contain software that is right for your type of business, it’s easier to narrow the field of choices and begin evaluating programs that are more likely to meet your needs.

Along with paying close attention to ERP program packages that have the ideal types of software included, make it a point to delve into how adaptable those software products actually are. While many packages will have built-in functions that will work just fine, you also want the ability to customize those functions to suit the needs of your company. Keep in mind that since ERP program products tend to be somewhat expensive, that extra flexibility means you can continue to use the same software as your business and its needs continue to evolve over the years.

As with just about any type of business tool, the cost of the ERP program will be a major concern. Even large businesses must watch the bottom line and work within a budget. Ideally, the goal is to find an ERP package that has all the bells and whistles you need, provides a sufficient degree in flexibility that you can use to modify and adapt the software when and as needed, and will fit into your budget without creating any type of financial distress. If your company is on an especially tight budget, consider looking into an older version of the program that has caught your eye. You may find it has all the components you desire and costs considerably less. Just make sure customer support is still available for that version before making the investment; this one consideration could save a great deal of money over the course of the business year.
