How Do I Become an IT Tester?

Jennifer Leigh

The qualifications to become an information technology (IT) tester depends on the area of IT that you wish to work in, but generally require an undergraduate degree in computer science or a related subject. After you receive an education, the next step to become an IT tester is to find a job in the field. IT testers work in such areas as web technology, software development, and information systems in organizations throughout the world, so the opportunities are there for individuals interested in the field to apply with these types of companies.

IT testers work to ensure that a specific component, technological process, or system works correctly. This involves operating the system or component before it is actually used by those who need it, whether an individual or large organization. You do not simply need technological knowledge to become an IT tester, you also need the ability the think critically about problems that could arise in the future and a good eye for details.

A bachelor's degree in computer science is a good first step to become an IT tester. Other majors that are commonly hired as IT testers include computer engineering and information technology. If you are motivated to attend more school, a master's or doctoral degree could help open more doors to positions with greater supervisory responsibilities and larger salaries. Take courses in school that focus on the basics of computer science as well as advanced software and hardware. Classes that look at the design and maintenance of software and hardware components should also be a part of your curriculum to best prepare you to become an IT tester.

During school, it is helpful to attempt to find an internship or entry-level job that can provide you with experience working in IT. At this point, it does not have to be an IT testing position, as any experience in the field will help you get hired to become an IT tester in the future. You will also have the opportunity to meet individuals in the field that can provide you with references for future jobs.

After you have received an education, you can begin to look for positions in the field of IT testing through IT associations. The advisor at your school, or a career services department, can also help you find available jobs after you graduate. In most instances, the application process involves sending your resume, a cover letter, and references to possible employers.
