An electronic engineering technician typically works to help engineers with the design and development of products. A person with this title may also assist with product testing, maintenance, and repair. If you want to become an electronic engineering technician, you’ll need to graduate from high school or obtain a general educational development diploma as your first step. Once you’ve secured this credential, you’ll likely need to seek post-secondary education in preparation for this field; this often means enrolling in an associate’s degree program or graduating from a trade school. In addition to the educational path you choose to complete, you may also receive hands-on training from your employer.

To become an electronic engineering technician, you’ll usually need to start out with earning a high-school level education. While you’re in high school, you may do well to pay close attention in your math and science classes. The concepts taught in these classes may prove helpful when you seek additional education and eventually in your career. You may also do well to take classes that help you build communication skills. They may prove important when the time comes for you to work as part of a team.

Many aspiring electronic engineering technicians pursue associate’s degrees in preparation for this career. You may do well to enroll in an electronics engineering associate’s degree program. If the school you choose does not offer this major, you may prepare to become an electronic engineering technician by selecting a closely related major. When you are comparing schools, you may consider programs that offer diplomas or certificates in a related field rather than a degree. To ensure your ability to be competitive in the job market, however, you may find it advantageous to earn a two-year degree, at minimum.

While studying to become an electronic engineering technician, you’ll usually take math and science classes as well as some basic classes in engineering. You’ll likely study such topics as applied electronics and computer science as well. Once you’ve completed your educational program, you may be able to apply for a job right away. If employers in your area are asking for certification, however, you may need to take steps to acquire additional credentials.

In addition to education, you’ll typically need good problem-solving skills to become an electronic engineering technician. You’ll likely need good manual dexterity and the ability to focus on details as well. Additionally, employers will probably expect you to get along well with others, as you may need to work as part of a team.
