In the United States, all coursework that will help you become an aircraft maintenance technician must be approved by the Federal Aviation Administration, (FAA). Be sure to only consider programs that are FAA-approved, and try to find a program in your area or an area that you will be willing to travel to. In other countries, find out what regulating body must approve such coursework and look for programs that are approved by that governing body. This will ensure you end up with the appropriate qualifications to become an aircraft maintenance technician in your region of the world.

One way to become an aircraft maintenance technician without enrolling in a college program is to join the military. You will be able to get specific job training, and you will not have to pay tuition rates to do so. The downside to this path is, of course, the commitment you must make to the military. You should be prepared to enroll in the military for several years if you want to get trained in this manner. Research what the enlistment requirements are before you sign up, as this may dictate whether the military is the right choice for you.

You will need to get some prior experience before you can become an aircraft maintenance technician. You can do this by securing an apprenticeship, or by applying for a job within the field that may not directly relate to aircraft maintenance. While you participate in an apprenticeship or perform other work duties, be sure to exhibit a strong work ethic and an ability to learn new skills quickly and efficiently. Your superiors will be more willing to recommend you for maintenance positions and even write you a letter of recommendation.
