To become a transportation coordinator, you must have the proper education and past work experience. A transportation coordinator is charged with overseeing transportation. Many industries use transportation coordinators, including entertainment, sports, and delivery services. The transportation coordinator performs similar job duties, regardless of the industry he or she chooses to enter.

Though some transportation coordinators obtain their positions through past work experience only, many companies now require a college degree. If your university does not offer a degree in transportation coordination, get a degree in business management. Be sure your coursework includes computer classes, because schedules and other information used by coordinators are kept on computers.

To become a transportation coordinator, you will need a minimum of five years' experience in the transportation field. Don't be afraid to start at the bottom. Work hard and move into increasingly more responsible positions. Maintain a log of your accomplishments to use on your resume to become a transportation coordinator.

Maintain a clean driving, criminal, and credit record. Depending on regional laws, many companies perform background, credit, and driving record checks before hiring. To become a transportation coordinator, you should maintain a spotless record.

Some transportation coordinators are expected to work weekends or evenings. Establish a lifestyle that allows such hours. Complete courses or switch to online coursework. Maintain a standard of living that does not require you to work a second job so you are available for any needed hours when you become a transportation coordinator. Be available and ready to work whatever hours are required.

Develop a resume geared toward the duties that will be expected of you when you become a transportation coordinator. Highlight past job performance that dovetails with a coordinator job. For example, if on your first job you filled in for the dispatcher when needed, be sure to include that on your resume. When you were asked to assist in a company's budget preparation, be sure to include it on your resume.

Watch your current company's job listings. When a transportation coordinator position opens, apply for it. In addition, check the job boards of other companies. Send your resume to those you would like to work for. Also, send it to companies that do not have a transportation coordinator opening listed, in case their coordinator just gave his or her notice but the search has not yet begun.

During the interview, focus on your flexibility with regard to hours and responsibilities. Learn about the company before the interview and discuss past accomplishments that fit with the company mission. Send a follow-up thank-you note to your interviewer.
