To become a testing engineer in the United States, you will likely need to obtain at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related discipline. If you are interested in obtaining high ranking positions, or if you simply want a better chance of finding a job right out of college, you might consider getting a master's degree in one of those disciplines. This field can be quite competitive and difficult to initially get into, so the more education you can acquire, the better your chances will be of finding a good job.

Due to the nature of the job, testing engineers generally need to have excellent math skills. You should also be skilled in at least one computer programming language if you want to become a testing engineer, though it may be helpful if you know several programming languages. It is essential that you have a strong aptitude for studying and resolving a wide range of technical problems. This means that you may need to have the ability to read and understand complex engineering terms and understand how to apply them.

In some cases, you might even be assigned projects that are already behind schedule. If you become stressed easily, this work could eventually become unpleasant for you.

In some situations, you may be asked to work as a trouble-shooting expert on job sites or for special projects. These positions tend to be quite demanding simply because employees have questions or problems that need to be solved as quickly as possible, and they will be depending on you to find solutions. As a general rule, testing engineers with at least ten years of experience would be placed in this type of position.

Individuals in these positions generally need to have great communication skills. To become a testing engineer, you may need to have the ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing. In some situations you might primarily communicate via email or other electronic means. In other positions you may have to discuss issues with people in a traditional face-to-face manner.
