If you become a tax assessor within the United States, you must obtain a license within the state in which you will be performing your duties. Holding a license is very beneficial because it shows your existing and potential customers that you are knowledgeable about the business. Most states will require you to pass a stipulated exam, as well as complete a certain number of work hours in order to obtain certification or licensing. Always make sure to identify the exact requirements that you need to meet for the area in which you will be working.

Possessing math and computer skills are necessities for people wanting to become a tax assessor. The math skills will be needed so that you can effectively calculate property and other types of taxes for your clients. Most of these calculations will be completed on computers, which does make them easier to perform, so computer skills are needed as well. Since you will be interacting with your clients on an almost daily basis, superb communication skills are also vital. Always make sure to stay up-to-date on tax laws that change because clients will often have questions and so that you can accurately perform tax calculations.

It is also helpful to have research and analysis skills. Many tax assessors note that it helps to have a logical thought process because this assists in being able to efficiently and effectively performing tax calculations. Since many tax assessors work within organizations, it also proves beneficial to have the ability to work well within groups.
