A person who wants to become a report coordinator should earn a bachelor's degree in a field such as technical writing, though in some cases it might make more sense to earn a bachelor's degree in a subject related to his or her field of choice. For example, an individual who would like to become a report coordinator for a pharmaceutical company can benefit from earning an undergraduate degree in chemistry. It is important, however, that any report coordinator has strong technical writing skills, since much of his or her job consists of composing and reviewing written documents. An individual who wants to become a report coordinator also should get at least three years of experience in a field in which he or she would like to work.

When working toward an undergraduate degree, it is valuable for a person who wants to become a report coordinator to gain experience writing technical documents for different fields or industries, this way he or she can learn which field is most appealing. A person might take courses or internships or participate in projects in which he or she gets opportunities to read and compose documents for fields they are interested in, like pharmaceuticals or information technology. The best way to get this experience is to enroll in a college program in a related field. For example, a person who would like to become a report coordinator in the information technology field might take courses in information networks which are accompanied by accredited technical writing classes.

An individual who wants to become a report coordinator also should make sure that he or she gains experience using word processing programs, such as Microsoft Office Word™, and spreadsheet programs, such as Excel™. Report coordinators also may need to use programs that may not be as common. For example, an individual working as a report coordinator for a sustainability advancement association might need to operate software that enables him or her to give sustainability ratings to different organizations. While this person who wants to become a report coordinator might not have the opportunity to learn this specific kind of software in college, he or she can gain experience using different kinds of programs by engaging in apprenticeships or internships. Those with less time might read books published by software programmers or go through online tutorials.

In most cases, a person who wants to become a report coordinator should compose a resume in which he or she highlights at least three of years of experience working with relevant reports. An aspiring report coordinator in the pharmaceutical industry, for example, should be able to demonstrate that he or she has composed documents that were compliant with regulations dictated by associations such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States. No matter what field the candidate is interested in going into, a good resume also should highlight evidence of attention to detail.
