A data processing manager holds a vital position in a data processing department. The job entails supervising and organizing employees, offering technical assistance, and coordinating the creation and maintenance of data systems. A position as a data processing manager generally offers a good salary with benefits, as well as the rewarding sense of really doing something that makes a difference. If you want to become a data processing manager, there are a number of things you’ll need to do to get the job.

Do some research and find out what will be expected of you, should you become a data processing manager. You’ll need to know a lot about computers, from system operations to relevant hardware. People in this position also need to know a good bit about financial administration. Do a search on the Internet or check out some books from the library on related subjects. You’ll get a good idea of whether or not this is really something you want to do, as well a good foundation of knowledge if you do decide to pursue this career.

Enroll in college and declare a major that will give you the kinds of skills you will need when you become a data processing manager. Business Administration and Computer Science are two examples of suitable majors. If you can afford the extra time, consider declaring one of these as a major and the other as a minor. Not only will you gain relevant experience by taking courses in both fields, you’ll also stand out above your competition when it comes time to apply for a job.

If you are working your way through school, take your job seriously and attempt to attain a management position if possible. For example, if you are serving tables at a restaurant when you’re not in class, work hard and apply for any management openings. Your job may have nothing to do with the responsibilities of a data processing manager, but moving up in it would demonstrate your ability to work with and supervise employees. These skills will serve you well when you become a data processing manager.

Start applying for jobs in your field as soon as you finish school. The odds of your becoming a data processing manager just out of college are very slim. An education is important, but experience is even more so. You will need to work for about 5-7 years in data processing before you can expect to move up to a management position. Even if you start out in a technical position, take advantage of any job you get by refining your communication and analytical skills as you go.

Apply for a position as a data processing manager when the time is right. With school behind you and several years of relevant work experience, you will compare favorably to others competing for this job. Keep in mind that your education didn’t end when you finished college. Read journals in your field and keep up with changes that may affect you and your field once you become a data processing manager.
