How can I Prepare for a Cruise?

When you prepare for a cruise, one of the most important items to take care of is making sure you have appropriate identification. If a passport is necessary, make sure it is in order before you prepare for a cruise.

You will also want to make sure that you have more than one means of obtaining money, such as acquiring traveler’s checks in addition to an emergency credit card. As you prepare for a cruise, keep in mind that carrying around large amounts of cash is never a good idea. In fact, it can be dangerous. You might be physically harmed as well as losing your money.

Of course, you will need to consider your wardrobe as you prepare for a cruise. Even if you are traveling to consistently mild location, it is advisable to bring along at least a few warmer items of clothing. You never know when you will want to take a walk along the beach in the cool night air, or when the weather might change suddenly. Comfortable attire is a necessity to fully enjoy your adventure.

Another thing to keep in mind as you prepare for a cruise is engaging someone to keep an eye on your home or care for your pets. These issues need to be taken care of long before you get ready to leave. Making sure things are in order will help you relax and enjoy your trip.

Something people tend to forget in the excitement as they prepare for a cruise is bringing along plenty of medication. If you take prescription medicine, refill it in advance and take along extra. Place the extra medicine in a separate container in a separate bag. For example, you might place one portion in your handbag and keep the rest in your suitcase. This way, if your luggage is lost or if your bags are somehow separated temporarily, you will have the medication you need.

Toiletries may be neglected as you prepare for a cruise, but you might not be able to find your favorite lotion or a good contact lens solution in certain locations, so it makes sense to bring these items along.

One of the best cruises I took with my family happened to be during Halloween one year. I made sure I packed enough outfits to fit the cruise activities for each of our family members.

But more importantly, the best and smartest things I packed for that cruise were a few items for each family member to wear for Halloween. I packed Billy Bob teeth for each of us, along with funny sunglasses and an odd hat. Our photos are hilarious and the video my husband took of us that one night still makes us split our sides laughing.

As we would enter a hallway or dining room, the double-takes we received from other passengers and even cruise staff was worth every penny I spent on those costume pieces. We looked like the family from the movie, Deliverance.

Definitely make a cruise checklist prior to packing, especially if you are packing for a whole family. You don't want to forget Junior's teddy if he can't sleep without it, or Susie's favorite Barbi doll who goes everywhere with her!

The main item I'd also recommend NOT forgetting is your camera or camcorder to record your trip for posterity. We've enjoyed watching our past shenanigans on cruise ships with our kids more than once!
