If you are seeking a way to bring a sense of calm and clarity to your professional life, you may wish to try meditation at work. Determining the best way to practice meditation at work depends largely on your office environment. Workplace meditation may be simple if you have your own office, but if you work in an open floor plan environment, meditating effectively may require a bit of creativity. If you work for a fairly freethinking company, consider speaking to your boss about introducing an office meditation space or even organizing an employee meditation workshop. Even if your company is conservative, you can likely find a few moments for meditation at some point in your day.

Should you have your own office, you will likely find that you can easily practice meditation at work without distracting others or drawing unwanted attention to yourself. Simply close your office door and spend a few moments practicing your preferred meditation technique. Even though you may be out of your supervisor’s sight, however, you should make sure that your meditation time is not encroaching on your assigned duties. Try meditating during your break or for the final minutes of your lunch hour.

Meditating in an open floor plan office will likely require a bit of creativity. If you work for a fairly relaxed, freethinking company, try speaking to your boss about your desire to practice meditation at work. Explain that meditation brings you a sense of clarity which in turn allows you to be more productive throughout the workday. Your boss may be willing to convert a disused office or conference room into a meditation space which any employee can use at appropriate times. You might even consider volunteering to organize a workshop in which meditation professionals educate your company about workplace meditation techniques.

Even if your company is unreceptive to your desire to introduce meditation at work, you can likely find a few moments for meditation at some point in your day. Consider finding a peaceful spot, such as an outdoor bench or a pond, that is within a short distance from your office. You can then spend part of your lunch break meditating in this spot. Alternatively, consider arriving at your office several minutes before you are scheduled to begin working. Before you approach the day’s first task, spend a few quiet moments focusing on your breathing and allowing a feeling of calm to descend on you.
